Mr Gilbert & Mr Sullivan 2004

by

George Baker

Mr Gilbert & Mr Sullivan was written by the late George Baker, well known as a performer and producer in the Norwich area from the 1960s. It was first produced by the East Norfolk Operatic Society in June 1970 and since then has been adapted and performed by different groups in other venues.

It is a fascinating insight into the lives of Gilbert and Sullivan and their somewhat turbulent relationship, told through ensembles, solos and choruses from nearly all the operas, together with extracts from their letters and diaries.

This production marked the end of our successful Silver Jubilee Year.

Act I consists of scenes at rehearsals of Trial by Jury, The Sorcerer, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance, Patience, Iolanthe and Princess Ida, at the Royalty Theatre, London 1875, the Opera Comique, London 1881, and the Savoy Theatre, London 1882.

Act II follows with similar scenes at The Mikado, Ruddigore, The Yeomen of the Guard and The Gondoliers at the Savoy Theatre 1885, 1887, 1888 and 1889.
