ISSUE NO 102
This edition of the Newsletter is to bring Members and Friends up to date with the decisions made at the AGM on 13 September, and to let you know what’s likely to be happening over the next few months. So there is no Presidential Prologue on this occasion.
The AGM was not an altogether happy event. Alan Stables commenced by saying that he thought that this might well be his last year as President of the Society, due to failing health. He said that he would maintain his connection with the Society and watch its progress with interest.
Mo Foster-Worton’s Chairman Address started by saying what a fantastic Society the Savoyards is to belong to and that we had put on many great productions over the years. However, he ended on a more negative note, saying that we need more people to serve on the Committee. He recounted the successes of the year, and thanked everyone involved.
The accounts, which showed a £118.93 loss over the year, were explained by Kath Whiting, and were adopted by the Society.
Under item 9 of the Agenda, the following people were elected to stand as Officers and Committee members:
- Chairman: Maurice Foster-Worton
- Vice-Chair : Keith Swetman
- Hon. Secretary: Kath Whiting
- Hon. Treasurer: Kath Whiting
- Publicity Officer: No nominations had been received for this position, but Mo said that, aided by Keith, he would take on this responsibility.
Committee Members: John Bill, Gillian Gibbs, Maurice Whiting and Val Williams.
When it came to discussing the future of the Society, a proposal was made that the new Committee should look at the dissolution of the Society, arrange a General Meeting, and work out detailed proposals for the disposal of the assets of the Society, according to the rules laid down in the Constitution. This proposal was amended to give the Committee the remit to discuss ways in which the Society could be taken forward, and that if they then felt that the Society was no longer viable, then to call a General Meeting at which the Society could be wound up. The meeting approved this amendment, giving the Committee the opportunity to discuss possible ways forward for the Society. This may involve Sing Throughs of complete operettas, Cakes and Choruses evenings (similar to the format of the recent Open Evening), Social events, Talks etc. It is also hoped to produce some concerts in the new year, but possibly with a slightly different format.
As a result of this discussion, it was agreed that there would be no immediate collection of subscriptions, and that the new people who came to the Open Evening and the two people who had contacted Mo this week, with a view to joining should be given ‘Guest Membership’ status, i.e. free, at least until 31 December 2012.
So this is the state of affairs that we, as Sheringham Savoyards, now find ourselves in. If you have any suggestions as to how YOU would like the Society to continue into the future, then please contact our Chairman, Mo Foster-Worton, on 01263 822807 or email at: firstname.lastname@example.org. All suggestions will be taken seriously and discussed by the Committee. For a variety of reasons, the Committee will not be meeting until 22 October, so you have plenty of time to come up with some alternative ideas!
Alan reported to the AGM that the death had recently been announced of Joan Farquhar. Joan was a founder member of the Savoyards, and Alan said that he had fond memories of performing on stage with Joan in many of the early productions. We send our love and condolences to Stiven.
