ISSUE NO 103
FROM THE PRESIDENT
I’m looking forward to the Come and Sing on the coast of Cornwall and the concert shipboard in Portsmouth Harbour – if you see what I mean. Both will actually take place on the coast of Norfolk “and I expect you’ll all agree” that Sheringham is an appropriate location for these nautical pieces. As a resident of a mere 45 years’ standing, I reckon this is a grand little place to live, and the Little Theatre, “scene of our former triumphs”, one of its greatest assets. May G&S on day grace these boards again, given a fair wind and renewed enthusiasm.
Meanwhile, let’s enjoy the coming months to the full. Do please persuade past Savoyards to join the “rollicking band of Pirates” and the “smart and sober men” – with ladies to match – for a final and memorable sing-off.
Of course one regrets saying, with Gianetta and Tessa, “farewell, my love” – but let us “revel in the past” – and may “every sigh that finds a vent, be a sigh of sweet content”. W.S. Gilbert wrote most of my piece for me, didn’t he? “And it’s greatly to his credit”, as are the last 30-odd years to ours.
FROM THE COMMITTEE
The EGM held on 7 December ratified the decision of the Committee to dissolve the Society with effect from 31 July 2013. It also ratified the Committee’s suggestion for a £1 subscription rate for Members of the Society. These subscriptions are now due and Kath would be pleased to receive these. Anyone who wishes to take part in any of the planned ‘productions’ will need to be registered as a Member for legal and insurance purposes. This is a précis of the decisions taken at the EGM. The full minutes will be put on to the Society website in due course.
For those of you who were not there, there was some talk of a ‘successor society’ being formed. If this appeals to you, then please let any member of the Committee know.
We are pleased to report that Mo is making very good progress following his stroke in early November. He is managing to walk a few steps with the aid of only one walking stick, although he needs a walking frame for longer journeys! Chrissy tells us that he should be coming home from hospital within the next week or so.
We all wish him well for continuing progress towards a complete recovery.
Many thanks to those people who braved the cold (although it wasn’t as cold as some years!) on the morning of 8 December to sing carols in aid of East Anglian Air Ambulance. The grand sum of £225 was raised.
COME AND SING EVENT
Since the last Newsletter we have discovered that a Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society Concert is scheduled for 16 March. It seems silly to split the audience within Sheringham, so we have decided to move our Come and Sing ‘Pirates’ to Saturday 23 March. This will be at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church and there will be a rehearsal for chorus singers on Friday 22 March at St. Joseph’s and an afternoon rehearsal for principals on Saturday 23 March at St. Andrew’s, followed by the performance in the evening. We are pleased to announce that Sarah Chadwick will be the MD for this. These Come and Sing events are fairly informal, and it is acceptable for all involved to use their scores if they wish to. We shall need principals for this, so if anyone wants to express an interest in any of the parts, please let Kath know. Only one person responded to the plea in the last Newsletter – so come on, let’s be having you!!
The date for this has now been finalised as Friday 17 May, and will be a Dinner at the Burlington Hotel, in Sheringham. We hope this will be an opportunity for as many of our current and former members to come and socialize together. If you have the names and contact details – preferably email addresses - for anyone you think should be invited, please let Kath have these details. Numbers will be limited to about 80 and menu choices will need to be made in advance. This event will be funded by the Society. More details will follow in subsequent Newsletters.
The plans for this are now taking shape. Jason Bell has agreed to produce a semi-staged concert version of HMS Pinafore at the Little Theatre. All the music will be included and a small portion of the libretto, with a narration to fill in the story. We are pleased to announce that Ro Curtis has agreed to be the MD for this, and she will be appearing at rehearsals at a later date. The dates are now finalised. We will get into the theatre on Tuesday 18 June, with a ‘technical’ rehearsal that evening, mainly for chorus. There will then be a Dress Rehearsal on Wednesday, with performances on Thursday and Friday 20 and 21 June. We started rehearsals on 4 January, and we managed to sing through all the chorus numbers in Act I. We could do with more chorus members - Jason is happy to have a fairly large chorus, particularly in view of the fact that the ladies and gentlemen are rarely on stage together!
So, another plea! Come along and join in – this will be your LAST opportunity to sing on stage with Sheringham Savoyards. Please note that we have put in a couple of extra rehearsals in March – see Dates for your Diary.
