ISSUE NO 104
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Helping to sing PIRATES on 23 March, I’ll be recalling two former productions, one in 1981 and one in 1998. Both were produced by the late Rob Newson, the one in 1998 being his last with us (and my first as Musical Director). It was “Robin’s Return” to us after a long gap, and he brought along a large male contingent to swell the ranks of pirates and police, from his main activity in those days – the Sheringham Shantymen.
Most of these chaps stayed with us (as Heavy Dragoons or whatever) for several years at least. Among them was Frank Wisbey (a convincing and rumbustious pirate), to whom we’ve lately had to say a sad goodbye. He was in most shows from that time until 2004, returning finally for Tantantara Tzing Boom in autumn 2009. A loyal chorus member, he occasionally got a special mention – ‘Albert the Butler’ in Candlelit Capers II, and one of the Guards in ‘Princess Ida’. Many of us will miss Frank, remembering his happy grin which enhanced the male chorus line, besides his being musically useful.
How many of you keep old programmes? Personally, I find browsing through mine rewarding and sometimes surprising!
FROM THE COMMITTEE
The Committee are working hard behind the scenes on the Come and Sing and HMS Pinafore, as well as the Society Dinner on 17 May. Attached you will find a form to complete with your choice of menu for that event. As we said before, numbers are limited so please let Kath know as soon as possible if you wish to attend – and bring a guest. Menu choices need to be with Kath by 26 April LATEST.
If a ‘successor society’ is to be formed, and wishes to receive a helping hand in the way of a ‘start-up’ grant from Savoyards’ residual funds, then a Committee needs to be elected, a Constitution agreed and a bank account opened. Please give this some thought and let any member of the Committee know if you wish to be involved.
We are pleased to report that Mo is making good progress following his stroke back in November. He is now walking with the aid of a stick, and can actually mange a few steps without this. He is using a wheelchair for longer journeys. We send our love to both Mo and Chrissy and wish Mo well for a continued and complete recovery. They are both hoping to be at the Come and Sing event later this month.
We are sorry to report the death of Frank Wisbey. Details of his association with the Society are given in Alan’s Presidential Prologue.
COME AND SING EVENT
We are now able to publish the cast list for the Come and Sing event on 23 March. This is: Major-General Stanley – Keith Swetman, Pirate King - Rex Wheeler, Samuel - John Bill, Frederic - Patrick Monk (Patrick is also acting as 'Producer'), Sergeant of Police - Chris Sullivan, Mabel - Rachel Goodchild, Edith - Chris Wheeler, Kate - Molly Percival, Ruth - Pam Warren. A narration has been prepared, and this will be read by David Allison.
The articles in the local free newspapers have created quite an interest (and sorrow that Savoyards is folding), and several people have indicated that they would like to come along on 23 March.
The £5 admission fee applies to all chorus and
As mentioned above, there is a form attached to
complete regarding your menu choices for this event. Numbers are
limited, so please let Kath know as soon as possible if you wish to
attend. Menu choices need to be made by 26 April. The Dinner will be
held at the Burlington Hotel, in Sheringham – timings still to be
confirmed, but probably 7p.m. for 7.30p.m. We would like as many
former members (as well as current members!) to come, so please let
Kath have the names and contact details – preferably email addresses
- for anyone you think should be included. Rather than invite a band
to provide some After-Dinner Entertainment, the Committee felt it
would be nice if some Society Members could entertain us with their
“Party Pieces”. Please give this some thought and let Kath know if
you would be interested in taking part. As previously mentioned,
this event will be funded by the Society.
The cast list for HMS Pinafore is more or less finalised: Sir Joseph Porter-Andy Weston; Captain Corcoran-Malcolm Poore; Ralph Rackstraw-Patrick Monk; Dick Deadeye-Jonathan Starling; Boatswain-Maurice Whiting and David Allison; Carpenter-Lester Shaw and Rex Wheeler; Josephine-still tbc; Hebe-Kath Whiting; Buttercup-Pam Warren.
Jason is keen to involve as many people as possible, so there is still time to come along and join in the fun, particularly if you know the piece fairly well. There will be some movement for those who are willing/able to do so, but Jason will accommodate anyone who does not wish to ‘dance’.
As mentioned before, this will be your LAST opportunity to sing on stage with Sheringham Savoyards.
The dates are also now finalised. We will get into the theatre on Tuesday 18 June, with a ‘technical’ rehearsal that evening, mainly for chorus. There will then be a Dress Rehearsal on Wednesday, with performances on Thursday and Friday 20 and 21 June.
We are hoping that demand for tickets will be fairly high, so we recommend you book early. Tickets are £8 each, to include a Souvenir Programme. It would be lovely to have two full houses!
ENOS will be presenting ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ at the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich from 8-11 May, at 7.30p.m., with a matinee on 11 May at 2.30p.m. All tickets are £12 and are available from the Box Office on 01603 620917. Please support them if you are able.
CSODS are presenting ‘The Sound of Music’ at the Pier Pavilion Theatre in Cromer from Saturday 25 May to Saturday 1 June, with matinees on Sunday 26 May and Saturday 1 June. Tickets are priced from £9.50 to £14 and are available from the Theatre Box Office on 01263 512495.
