It seems appropriate, if we have to ‘close’, to end where we began. ‘PINAFORE’ is one of G&S’s top shows, cheerful and tuneful, the one that definitely cemented their arrival on the lyric stage, proving that ‘TRIAL’ and ‘SORCERER’ were not mere temporary triumphs. It’s been a favourite, and good Box Office, ever since the far-off days of 1878. Equally distant-seeming to some of you, the year 1979 still vibrates in the memory of those Savoyards who “inaugurated our new career” with it on Sheringham Little theatre’s stage in June of that year.

I was the first Chairman and First Lord, having amazed others beside myself as Ko-Ko some years earlier, in a North Walsham group which came ‘on tour’ to this coast. My son returned from the dress rehearsal and said gravely to his mother “Sheringham’s going to be very surprised.” People who hadn’t seen their local Librarian in that earlier ‘MIKADO’ were somewhat incredulous at the new Sir Joseph, one elderly lady saying “Mr Stables, they tell me you do funny things on the stage!?”

The thirty four years since ‘PINAFORE I’ have been enjoyable, hilarious, even (that overworked adjective) exciting. Two main aspects of my own pleasure; first, at presenting local audiences – and aren’t we lucky in our Theatre – with these wonderful words-and-music; offerings, and (a very close second) the making of lasting friendships with so many talented and sympathetic and (dare I say) Absolutely Fabulous people. We leave you with feelings of pleasure. Take heart of grace!

Although this is officially the May edition, we felt it would be useful to circulate it during April, in order to give a last chance to the slow coaches among you to put your names down for the Society Dinner on 17 May. Please get your names/numbers and menu choices to Kath as soon as possible. The Dress Code for the event is Smart Casual.

The Committee is pleased with the progress of the rehearsals for HMS Pinafore under the guiding hand of Ro Curtis. We will be starting to ‘move’ soon, so please ensure you have learnt all the words and notes!!!

A letter regarding the formation and format of a possible successor society was received by the Committee, but the current Savoyards Committee feel that they have not, nor should they have, any remit to discuss what happens after the winding up on 31 July. Therefore, with this Newsletter is a form for you to complete to indicate whether you would be interested and prepared to commit to belonging to some form of successor society. It will then be up to the group of people who respond positively to that to meet and discuss the way forward, form a Committee, establish a Constitution etc. Once that is done, this group can then ‘go public’ and advertise in order to attract new members. Please return your completed form to Kath Whiting as soon as possible.

The Committee started to discuss the disposal of Savoyards’ assets at its last meeting. It was felt that any staging/flats/props etc. which are currently in store should be offered to other local societies, primarily ENOS and CSODS. If anyone knows of any other group who would make good use of these valuable assets please let Kath know.

We have heard that Janet Filby and her husband will be moving to New Zealand in early May to be nearer their children and grandchildren. Janet has already established that there is a G&S Society in a town about ½ hour from where they will be living, so she hopes to join that and continue her singing! We wish them all the best for this new venture.

It was felt that this was a pleasant and successful evening, despite the weather! We could have done with a few more in the audience, but those who were there certainly enjoyed it. We were pleased to see Mo there, as he continues to make good progress in his recovery from his stroke, and grateful thanks to Chrissy for helping with the refreshments on the night.

This is your last chance to put your names down for the Dinner on Friday 17 May at the Burlington Hotel in Sheringham. Kath needs names/numbers and menu choices by 26 April. There are currently 67 names on the list (maximum 80!) and we have been busy contacting ‘old’ members and associates to come along. Timings are 7p.m. for 7.30p.m. and the Dress Code is Smart Casual (not Formal). We have a couple of ‘volunteers’ to provide some After-Dinner Entertainment, but need more. Please give this some thought and let Kath know if you would be interested in taking part. As previously mentioned, this event will be funded by the Society.

As mentioned above, rehearsals are progressing well with Ro taking us in hand and getting the best out of our singing. We will be starting to ‘move’ soon. Please see Dates for your Diaries below to confirm when you are needed.

The Committee discussed the possibility of doing an extra performance, which will depend on how tickets sales are going. SO …… there is a chance that we will do a performance on the Wednesday night as well. We will let you know as soon as we are able!
