Sheringham Savoyards has now closed. Its "Farewell" production was performed at Sheringham Little Theatre on 20 and 21 June 2013. Details are shown below.
This site will remain online for the forseeable future as an archive site and as a tribute to all former members for all their hard work and commitment and in recognition of the pleasure given to their audiences.
Farewell Production of HMS Pinafore
Sheringham Savoyards was formed in 1979, when a
poster was displayed in Sheringham asking for anyone interested in
performing HMS Pinafore. As a result, twenty eight people packed
into Alan Stables lounge and Sheringham Savoyards was born!
Since then the Society has performed a G&S opera as its main summer show and with few exceptions, an autumn show as well. This has enabled all the operas to be presented and in addition, they have performed Toad of Toad Hall, Follow the Star and a concert version of Merrie England and Tom Jones, a total of well over fifty five productions in all.
In this production there were three founder members performing, Molly Percival and Monica Jarvis in the chorus, while the Musical Director, Ro Curtis played Josephine in the original 1979 production. The founder chairman, Alan Stables, Sir Joseph Porter KCB in 1979, became the society's president. Since the formation of the society, there have been two Presidents, eight Chairmen, nine Musical Directors, ten Directors and many members and friends.
There is a great deal of sadness that the society had to finish but also a great feeling of satisfaction in the fact that for thirty four years the flag for Gilbert and Sullivan was flown and entertained a great many people.
The society would like to thank everyone who has contributed, in any way, to the thirty four years of presenting Gilbert and Sullivan operas. To all members and friends, past and present, to the musical directors, directors, accompanists and the Little Theatre, not to mention the support of the advertisers. But most of all, to the members of the audiences, who have made all the efforts worth while with their continued support.
